Planning a wedding can put a strain on your sleep, but it's crucial that you get plenty of shut-eye each night. Beauty sleep is real, and not getting enough sleep can put a damper on your looks on your big day.

Beauty sleep is objectively real. In an experimental Swedish study people who were sleep deprived were perceived as less healthy, less attractive, and more tired than after a full night's sleep. Poor sleep can have a negative effect on your skin. In a recent study, sleep-deprived people experienced increased signs of skin aging and slower recovery from environmental stressors such as scratches or sunburn.

Your skin needs sleep at night to recover and look your best. When you get enough sleep, you're better able to fend off stressors and recover after sun exposure. Resting for seven to eight hours before your wedding can help you look your most beautiful, even before the makeup is applied.

How to Get Your Beauty Sleep Before the Big Day

  • Maintain a regular sleep schedule and bedtime routine. Consistency can help you get to bed on time each night. Keeping a regular schedule makes it easy for you to start feeling sleepy around the same time each night. With a daily bedtime routine, you'll send a signal to your brain that it's bedtime and time to start feeling tired. Your bedtime routine can be simple, such as washing makeup off of your face and brushing your teeth before going to bed.

  • Practice good sleep health. Avoid pitfalls that can interfere with healthy sleep, such as late-night caffeine, screen time, heavy meals, and vigorous exercise before bed. Sleep on your back instead of your stomach or side, so you can benefit from gravity and reduce facial puffiness.

  • Let go of wedding stress. Don't let wedding stress keep you up at night. Use relaxation techniques such as yoga, meditation, and deep breathing. If you often end up awake at night remembering tasks you need to take care of, keep a journal beside your bed that you can use to write them down and get back to them during the day.

  • Ask for help. All of the tasks of wedding planning and preparation can put a strain on your schedule, and you may feel like you have to sacrifice sleep to stay on top of it all. Delegate what you can to friends and family so they can help support you and make it easier for you to have a great wedding -- but still get the sleep you need to enjoy it.

  • Don't stay up late before the wedding. Your number one priority on the night before your wedding is getting enough sleep so you'll be refreshed. Avoid scheduling events such as a rehearsal dinner late in the evening. Instead, make sure they end well before your bedtime so you can get your beauty sleep.
